Today is National Donut Day! Tell us what your favorite donut shop is, and your favorite kind of donut is. Here are my picks.

First of all, don't judge me for the spelling. Although the official dictionary spelling is doughnut, spelling it the way I choose to -- donut-- has been around since the late 1800s, and is becoming a more popular spelling for this much loved wonderful circle of dough.

Growing up, my favorite donut of all time was Dunkin' Donut's lemon filled powdered donut. I loved it so much that I was heartbroken when they decided to discontinue it. Still so sad that it doesn't exist anymore.

My mom once tried to appease me with a Krispy Kreme lemon donut but it wasn't nearly as good to me. It was way too sweet and it had icing on top instead of powdered sugar.

My absolutely favorite donut shop now is Uncle Dood's on Robbins Street (corner of Water Street) in downtown Toms River. I have been to other donut shops that make them fresh in front of you, but they don't have that perfect flavor and texture the way Uncle Dood's does it. Still, with the hundreds of flavors Uncle Dood's has offered, I am mostly in love with their plain donut, fresh out of the fryer. Sometimes a little powdered sugar on top makes it taste like a zeppoli, but it is just delicious perfection when it's naked!

My son Christopher loves Top That in Point Pleasant Beach...he gets some kind of freshly-made crazy combination of glazed with bacon on top. It also gets an A for atmosphere. You'd enjoy yourself sitting down and eating in their donut dining room.

What's your favorite kind of donut, and from which donut shop?
