As I was walking into work today, I realized I had a paranoid and completely irrational fear...and then I realized it wasn't all that irrational.

What am I so worried about? Getting injured by large icicles falling off a tall building. (Yes, I'm ridiculous, and I'm PRETTY SURE this fear was all caused by some episode of CSI or something...)

But apparently people are injured and killed every year when falling icicles turn into falling shanks from above.

Seriously?!? NOT COMFORTING.

What's worse, what if an icicle falls and kills you, then melts away and no one knows what happened? Gah!

The thing is, falling icicles are one of those things you just have to accept. Sure, we can all do our best to clean them off our homes, and I suppose all building owners should do the same, but there are some places we just can't reach.

It's very much a 'wrong place, wrong time' situation. The odds of it happening are small, but still, it's POSSIBLE.

So if you see a petrified woman walking briskly around downtown Toms River, glancing upward every 5 seconds, it's probably me. Go ahead, make fun, but when you get a little shard of ice in your eye or nasty bump on your head, I'm going to say, 'I told you so.'

Hard hats for everyone!
