What an easy and clever way for parents to get their child to become a member of Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore!

Usually kids sign up at school in the fall for Girl Scouts...but with the pandemic and schools not meeting regularly in-person or holding after-school activities inside rooms on-premises like the Girl Scouts would normally do, girls are missing out.

With this new drive-up and sign-up membership event, girls will get to take part in a few outdoor activities (a snack will even be provided) while mom or dad chills out in their car. And parents can sign up their child on the spot!

The first events takes place in Farmingdale and Toms River. You just need to sign up in advance so that they know to expect you. Here's how it works:

The drive-thru events will take place on Sunday,  Nov. 15th, at the following two locations:

--  Camp Sacajawea, 242 Adelphia Road in Farmingdale, 2 pm - 4 pm

-- The Girl Scouts Ocean Service Center, 1405 Freehold Road in Toms River, 10 am - Noon

Parents must register their daughters in advance for this free, outdoor event. For everyone's safety, face coverings and social distancing are required.

Parents may relax in their cars while their daughters have fun making slime, shooting off mini rockets and exploring other STEM activities. Building skills and interest in science, technology, engineering, and math is part of an important Girl Scout initiative to fill the STEM workforce with women in the future.

Girl Scout programs also focus on the outdoors, life skills and entrepreneurship. A mix of in-person and virtual programs are available so that girls can stay engaged with their troops.

The membership fee is $40 but, as a nonprofit charity, Girl Scouts provides support to girls whose families may be experiencing financial difficulties.

Girls who register to become Girl Scouts by Nov. 15 will receive a $10 coupon redeemable at the Girl Scout online shop. All girls who participate in the drive-thru event will take home an activity kit and a special Girl Scout patch. And for families who prefer no contact, the activities can be packaged to take home.

In keeping with the Girl Scout tradition of giving back to the community, families who attend the drive-thru event are asked to donate a nonperishable food item to support the Bradley Food Pantry.

Eileen Higgins is CEO of the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore and says,

“We’re excited to try a new, convenient way to introduce local families to the benefits of Girl Scouts. We offer girls from all backgrounds opportunities to thrive in our progressive leadership programs and adults the chance to mentor and lead girls through volunteering."

So spread the word to other parents you know and take advantage of this wonderful program that is especially important to be holding during a time where so many girls are feeling isolated and not having a chance to become part of something bigger within the community.
