Group IV
Cherokee 1, Freehold Twp. 0
Matt Krause finished off a pass from fellow senior Brandon Michael in the 24th minute and the Chiefs (16-2-2) held on to top the Patriots (14-7), advancing to the Group IV championship game Sunday at Franklin High School against West Orange.
Senior goalkeeper Jack Goldsmith stood tall for Freehold Township during the second half to keep the Patriots within a goal, but the the visitors could not produce the equalizer and fell one win shy of a return trip to the Group IV championship game after losing in the 2021 final.
Group II
Delran 2, Holmdel 1
Junior Drew Roskos scored off throw-ins from senior Michael Papi in both the first and second halves as the Bears (13-3-5) held on to top the Hornets (18-3-1) and reach the Group II championship game Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Franklin High School.
The winner by Roskos broke a 1-1 tie just over three minutes into the second half, with the junior heading in Papi's long throw. Roskos tied the game with settle-and-strike of Papi's throw-in during the first half.
Junior David Weiner got Holmdel on the board with a rip from the top of the 18-yard box that hit a Delran defender and kicked into the goal.
Holmdel senior goalkeeper Ilan Golden provided a first-half highlight by saving a penalty kick, which also denied Roskos what would have been the first leg of a hat trick.
Group I
Haddon Twp. 6, Shore 3
Senior Luke Chatten recorded a hat trick, including two goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half to put the Hawks (20-2-1) in the driver's seat during a semifinal win over the Blue Devils (9-10-3).
Chatten scored off long throw-ins in both the 25th and 35th minutes to transform a 1-1 deadlock into a 3-1 lead for Haddon heading into halftime. The senior then capped the game with a 30-yard missile to the upper 90 in the 74th for his 28th goal of the season.
Chatten also assisted the second of two goals by senior Colton Shaub to run his season-long assist total to 23. Shaub opened the scoring with a rip inside the near post from 15 yards away in the third minute and extended the Haddon Twp. lead to 5-2 on a chip shot in the 69th.
Shore pulled even, 1-1, in the 25th minute when freshman Cooper Attaway headed in a service from senior Conner Katz. The Blue Devils then cut their deficit to 3-2 six minutes in the second half when freshman Santino Scarponi buried a 35-yard direct kick with a quick restart that caught the Hawks off guard.
Junior Colin McCarthy answered Scarponi's first goal with another Haddon Twp. goal off a long throw-in, giving the Hawks a 5-2 lead in the 50th minute.
Scarponi added his second goal of the game in the final minute to round out the scoring.
Sectional Championship
South Jersey Non-Public A
(1) CBA 1, (3) St. Peter's Prep 0
Senior Will Thygeson scored the game-winning goal in the 68th minute and the Colts (18-1) shut out the Marauders (13-6-2) to win their seventh sectional championship in eight years while advancing to the Non-Public A final for the sixth time in eight years.
After putting St. Peter's goalkeeper Simon Yanez under duress for most of the second half, CBA finally slipped a shot past him with a little more than 12 minutes left to play. Junior Dimitry Corba won the ball near midfield and pushed it up the middle of the field before playing a pass toward the left side of the field.
Thygeson gathered the ball, cut it back toward the middle and took a 16-yard, right-footed shot that skipped into the far corner of the goal.
Yanez made two acrobatic saves on dangerous strikes from juniors Lawrence Mancino and Dylan Millevoi, with Mancino's near-miss coming in the 43rd and Millevoi's in the 57th.
CBA's defense clamped down from the midway point of the first half until the 73rd minute, holding St. Peter's without a shot for a stretch of 54 minutes.
Wednesday marked CBA's 18th straight victory since dropping an opening-day, overtime battle against Marlboro. On Saturday at Franklin High School, CBA will go with 20 in a row, as well as a fourth state title in the last 12 years, when the Colts take on defending champion Seton Hall Prep in a rematch of last year's Non-Public A final.
Seton Hall Prep rode its elite defense to a 2-0 victory over CBA in the 2021 championship game.
South Jersey Non-Public B
(1) St. Rose 0, (3) Bishop Eustace 0 - St. Rose advances on penalties, 5-3
Junior Diego Nieves capped the shootout round with St. Rose's fifth conversion and the the Purple Roses (10-4-4) outlasted the Crusaders (8-9-2) to win their first sectional championship since 2010.
St. Rose came within inches of a deciding goal during regulation time on multiple occasions, but could not break through. Senior James Vitale -- who scored two goals in each of St. Rose's first two tournament games -- settled for two near-misses in the first half and senior Packy O'Hearn hit the crossbar with a shot during the third minute of the second half.
In the 76th minute, Bishop Eustace goalkeeper Karl Wissman did his part to keep the hosts off the board with a double-save to momentarily stave off elimination for the Crusaders.
St. Rose converted all five of its attempts in the round of penalty kicks, with O'Hearn, Vitale, senior Mike Conlon and senior Matt Cheney each knocking a shot in to set up Nieves for the winner. On the shot prior to the clincher by Nieves, Bishop Eustace clanged an attempt off the crossbar to open the door for the Purple Roses.
In its first trip to the Non-Public B championship game since winning it all in 2010, St. Rose will take on three-time defending champion Gill St. Bernard at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Franklin High School.
