I've been dragging my feet on it, when I went to the NJ-MVC over the summer to get my Jersey plates and registration I was one document short of getting a real ID.

Between that, and the fact that I don't want to go to the NJ-MVC anymore than I have to, I still haven't gotten my real ID.

Fortunately, it looks like we've been granted another extension to get our real ID's in order.

What Is A Real ID?

Real ID's are what you need in order to get into certain federal buildings as well as some nuclear power plants.

For the everyday New Jersey resident like you and I though, the biggest purpose of a real ID is to board a domestic flight.

Originally, real ID's were supposed to go into effect back in April of 202, but due to COVID-19, it was pushed back to May 3rd, 2022.

How Do You Get A Real ID?

First things first, you'll want to schedule an appointment with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

Those appointments can potentially be booked a while out, I know when I had my appointment for my license, it was a four-week wait.

Secondly, you're going to need Six Points of ID which can range from a valid driver's license, to mail with your current address or a current lease or rental agreement.

There are a lot of options for the Six Points, so be sure to read through all of your options.

What Is The New Date Real ID's Will Be Required?

According to Patch, the new date was extended due to some lingering problems with COVID-19 as well as a backlog of requests.

The new date is now May 7th, 2025.

For someone like me who puts stuff like this off until the last moment, it's a blessing!
