People are getting excited about their next Anchor Property Tax Benefit and as the checks get closer to coming out there is a new SCAM ALERT for New Jersey residents, don't get burned by the scammers out there and there are a ton of them. Seems like every day you encounter some sort of sketchy incident, whether it's a strange letter, email, or phone call. So beware of the "Anchor Rebate Scam".
In a recent NJ.com article, "The program will pay up to $1,500 to homeowners and $450 for renters, with senior homeowners and renters getting an extra $250." So with this kinda money out there here come the crooks!
Types of Scams to Watch
1. Text Messages: Be careful when getting text messages that refer to your Anchor Rebate. In the NJ.com report the Treasury Department commented “We will never ask for personal information via text about your ANCHOR benefit.” In addition, they added if you are contacted be sure to "contact the Treasury Department directly". DO NOT give information out via text message.
2. Phone Calls: Officials warn you to beware of calls regarding your Anchor money. Numerous scam phone calls get sent out around the state. NJ.com, in their article, pointed out “Callers can falsify information to your caller ID, called cloning or spoofing, to hide their identity and trick you into giving away personal information,” Phony collection agency calls are possible to claim you owe tax money.
There are two ways to get information. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be a collection agency call the state collection department, Pioneer Credit Recovery, at (866) 372-6840. For questions about calls or texts contact the state at (609) 292-6400.
