Only months after opening, national retailer closing store at troubled New Jersey mall
It appears that the troubled Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing is losing yet another store.
Even worse is the fact that this store opened in a space where another national shutdown a few years ago and this store itself has only been open for a relatively short amount of time.
Watching Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing, NJ
Those who have been following this four-decade-old shopping center in the heart of Atlantic County have witnessed its relatively rapid decline over the past few years.
The dominos began to fall in the fall of 2018 when Sears closed its massive 207,000-square-foot store. The next year, JCPenney closed. Shoppers World, which filled half of the JCPenney space, quickly came and went. Countless other stores and restaurants have also shut down — Ruby Tuesday, Johnny Rockets, Champs, Express, New York & Company, The Children's Place, GNC, and American Eagle, just to name a few.
Of course, in its prime, perhaps you'll remember Hamilton Mall had stores like the San Francisco Music Box Company, Sundance Video, Sam Goody, Radio Shack, and KB Toys, along with a food court that featured all kinds of great restaurants. Those were the days.
Obviously, many of those national chains had their own problems, so one cannot blame the mall itself for stores closing in the mall itself. However, the mall has certainly seen better days and some of the stores still inside are looking for every single customer that they can get.
Rainbow Shops in Mays Landing, NJ, Closing
A recent walk-through of Hamilton Mall took us to the second level above where Santa and the Easter Bunny hold court during their respective seasons and when New York & Company closed their store a number of years ago, another chain moved into that space rather quickly — Rainbow.
Rainbow, which offers clothing and accessories for teenagers and young women at about 1,000 locations nationwide, opened in the mall in November 2022. Now, in July 2024, it appears to be shutting down after only about 20 months.
Banners trumpeting "everything must go now!" are hanging in its windows and clothing racks feature "closing this store" signs as far as the eye can see.
When we walked past, the store was relatively busy with lots of bargain hunters, so those wanting to grab a few things probably shouldn't wait too long.
