Macy's, Inc. announced today that they are laying off more than 4,500 employees, and closing more than 30 Macy's stores across the country this year -- including one here in New Jersey.

The Macy's at Middlesex Mall in South Plainfield is expected to close in spring 2016.

Luckily there are still plenty of other Macy's locations in our area to get your shopping fix, including Brunswick Square Mall in East Brunswick, Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold, Monmouth Mall in Eatontown, and Ocean County Mall in Toms River.

Macy's CEO Terry J. Lundgren said in a press release that the reason behind the store closings were poor sales.

“In light of our disappointing 2015 sales and earnings performance, we are making adjustments to become more efficient and productive in our operations. Moreover, we believe we can operate more effectively with an organization that is flatter and more agile so we can pursue growth and regain market share in our core Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s omnichannel businesses faster and with more intensity."

I actually do a good amount of my shopping at Macy's, so I'm glad the stores around here are staying open...for now, at least!
