Barnegat Police are out with a scam alert after reports started flowing in about scammers requesting access to residents computers and then asking for money for what is actually fraudulent services.

A key thing to remember, police say, is that Google, Norton, Microsoft or any other company will never contact you over the phone and request payment on a prepaid card such as a gift card to pay for services.

"All residents are reminded that a legitimate company will never have you go out and purchase any type of gift cards (Green Dot, Google Play, ITunes, etc.) to pay them for their services. Nor will any company demand payment utilizing a payment transfer company like Western Union."

Barnegat residents getting these calls is asked to contact the Police Department and/or report to the FBI atIC3.gov.
