Mega Movies

On Friday's morning show I mentioned the battle between The Avengers and Johnny Depp's Dark Shadows would be an interesting one since it seems almost automatic that a Johnny Depp movie always seems to bring in $25 million just because he's in it. I was right about that. It brought in $28.8 million. As far as a battle between Dark Shadows and The Avengers, not so much.

Just when you thought all the talk in the movie world this year would be about all the money The Hunger Games made, The Avengers completely shattered the record for an opening weekend by bringing in over $200,000,000 this weekend.

I guess we can start calling it summer season for movies. May is here, and so are The Avengers! I did a little research and almost every review I've seen is a positive one. Some reviewers didn't love it though, like one review I read at boxofficemagazine.com.

Last week I was wondering which movie, if any would knock The Hunger Games out of #1 at the box office. I thought if any movie could do it, it would be The Lucky One with Zac Efron. I was half right.

I didn't think any movie had a chance to beat The Hunger Games this week, and I was almost wrong. The Hunger Games streak at number one almost came to an end this weekend, and it was The Three Stooges that almost dethroned it. The Hunger Games did manage to make it four weeks in a row, grabbing $21.5 million and lifting it's total to $337.1 million dollars.

I have no explanation for wanting to see Titanic 3D. I have been spending years making fun of the movie. I mean how many times can you say 'Rose' in a  three hour movie? And why couldn't Rose slide over on that piece of wood and give poor Jack a chance? Despite all that, I have this odd desire to go through the whole thing all over again to see it in 3D. Julia Roberts new movie Mirror, Mirror hit theaters this weekend. My wife wanted to see it, and it does look cute, but when I hear 'Julia Roberts', my 'chick flick radar' kicks in. We never made it, but a lot of people did. Mirror, Mirror pulled in $19 million, good for third place. Wrath of the Titans was second with $34.2 million and nothing came close to The Hunger Games which grabbed another $

I had a sneaking suspicion when I was at the midnight screening of The Hunger Games at Mega Movies last week, that box office take would be amazing. There was a buzz that comes along only once in a long while. It wasn't just a movie, it was an event and the numbers showed it. The Hunger Games brought in $155 million, the top non-sequel, non-summer movie opening of all time!

This is the week all The Hunger Games fans have been waiting for! The movie of course is based in the best selling novel by Suzanne Collins. The novel has over 26 milion copies in print on the U.S. alone, so it stands to reason that this movie is going to be huge. I can't wait for our midnight screening at Mega Movies Stadum 13 at the East Brunswick Square Mall on Route 18.

It cost $250 million to make, but all that money couldn't help it  beat 'The Lorax' this weekend. Disney's 'John Carter' brought  in $30.6 million, no match for 'The Lorax' and it's $39.1 million take in it's second week. 'Project X' fell to #3, and Eddie Murphy's 'A Thousand Words' was a disappointing sixth place with only $6.4 million.

It was a huge weekend at the box office for 'The Lorax', bringing in almost $71 million on the U.S. and Canada! Of course, that was tops this weekend, representing the biggest opening of the year so far according to reuters.com.
