Water service is returning to normal in Red Bank, Fair Haven, Little Silver and Rumson after a water main break on Saturday.

New Jersey American Water spokesman Peter A. Eschbach said crew cut out the damaged section of the 36-inch cast iron water main and replaced it with ductile iron around midnight Saturday night.

"Everyone's water service has been restored. All customers, including those who were not in last night's lift, may stop boiling tap water prior to use, and may resume using water service normally," Eschbach said on Sunday afternoon.

"We are in the process of slowing filling the system back up this morning. Customers who had low pressure should be seeing it improve, and those customers who had no water service should be seeing a gradual return," Eschbach said, adding there are still some road restoration to be done.

Service was back slowly on Sunday morning to get all of the air out of the pipes "and avoid more problems with breaking pipes due to quick pressure changes," Eschbach explained. "We thank everyone for their patience over the past day and a half.

The boil water order was lifted for all the affected areas on Saturday night except for the immediate area of the break in Little Silver including Rumson Place, Garden Road, Pinckney Road, Branch Avenue, Spring Street, Fox Hill Drive,Silverwhite Avenue, Alden Terrace, Standish Road, Salem Lane and Bennett Lane.

Once the boil water order is lifted, NJAW advised customers take the following steps:

  • Run your water faucets for 3-5 minutes to flush your service connection and interior plumbing with water from the service main.
  • Empty and clean your automatic ice makers and water chillers.
  • Drain and refill your hot water heater if the temperature is set below 113 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Service connections with a water softener/cartridge filters should be run through a regeneration cycle or other procedures recommended by the manufacturer.
