Jeter called Hal Steinbrenner this morning to inform him of his plans to retire but asked the owner to keep the news quiet, team president Randy Levine told ESPNNewYork.com.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the game DJ was very likely to hit 3K at on July 8th was rained out, and I had tickets to it. He is the only member of the 3,000 hit club to record all of his hits with the New York Yankees, and the only player to join the club as a Yankee.
