For the fifteenth year, an increased number of township police will be out patrolling area shopping centers on foot starting on Black Friday.

According to the police department's press release, the extra details will be out on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as well as the three days before Christmas. Chief Nils Bergquist said that on Black Friday, they'll also be deploying its Mobile Command Post where they'll put a camera up in the air to view all the different plazas.

However, Bergquist encourages personal vigilance. "What we're telling people is to be aware of their surroundings, be aware of who's around them. Do not leave their pocketbooks and wallets unattended, to keep them on their person when they're loading their packages."

Bergquist also advises shoppers to lock their vehicles and to place valuables out of site. Shoppers are also being encouraged to contact police if you notice suspicious activity or persons and if you can't get to police, reach out to store security.

Other Tips Include:

  • Do not carry unnecessary identification, credit cards, or social security cards with you. Keep them at home in a safe place.
  • For cards that you must carry with you, record information such as financial institution name and contact information, card number, etc. and keep it at home in a safe place.
  • While shopping, do not place your purse or wallet in your cart. Carry it where you have constant control of it or carry just a wallet on your person and leave your purse at home or in your vehicle out of view from others.
  • When you are in the parking lot, do not place your purse in an open trunk of your car while loading purchases as thieves sometimes monitor parking lots for this type of opportunity.
  • If your purse or wallet is stolen, notify police immediately; do not wait until you get home. Try to obtain a description of the suspect or suspect vehicle.
  • As soon as possible after a theft, notify any applicable credit card companies, banks, etc.
