Brookdale Tuition to Rise

Brookdale Community College students could be looking at a tuition increase of about $60 a semester in the 2014-15 school year, under a proposed $86.7 million budget the college’s Board of Trustees approved overwhelmingly Thursday night.

With one abstention and one opposed, board members authorized the budget proposal to be forwarded to the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders, which allocates the county share of funding for Brookdale, which includes its main campus in the Lincroft section, its Freehold campus and satellite locations in Long Branch, Hazlet, Neptune and Wall.

Classes and training also can be made available in places of work or in local high schools and Brookdale offers distance education opportunities as well as a partnership with Rutgers.

Brookdale’s proposed spending plan proposes a tuition increase of $3.25 for each credit. A student taking 15 credits — the maximum — would have to pay $60.45 more a semester, officials said.

The $60.45 increase also takes into account a general service fee that is calculated at 24 percent of tuition, according to college spokeswoman Avis McMillon.

According to College President Maureen Murphy, Brookdale has not increased tuition in the past two years, and in one of those years, tuition decreased.

Currently, students pay tuition of $115.50 a credit and a general service fee of $27.72 a credit or $2,148.30 a semester in tuition and fees, according to McMillon.
