You might have to be careful once you break the news to your child that the toy they just unwrapped was RENTED, but renting a hot, expensive toy could be an alternative if you can't get your hands on the item or aren't sure your child will even LIKE it. Toygaroo offers parents the chance to rent toys for a fraction of what they would cost to buy.

Depending on the service plan, every month or every other month, a box comes in the mail with a new set of toys. When the time is up, the toys are sent back and a new box will be on its way. Interesting new idea, and it would keep your kids from getting bored by letting them look forward to opening a new box every month or so, but I think this could also lead to attachment issues and sadness at having to let go of something they've come to love.
