The Oklahoma Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster emphasizes the best way to help victims of Monday's tornado is to make a monetary donation or a blood donation.

"Please support these rescue and recovery efforts with donations of cash to your favorite responding charity. Donations of items such as clothing and supplies are not encouraged," reads a message on their website.

Earlier, state officials told NBC News that sending toys and clothing, while well-meaning, often adds to the confusion during the recovery period according to NBC News. Officials also don't want people just showing up to help.

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin (R) has established the OK Strong Disaster Relief in conjunction with the United Way of Central Oklahoma to help with the long term needs of victims. Donations can be made by calling (405) 236-8441 or online at unitedwayokc.org. n

The Better Business Bureau warns about making donations to questionable organizations  and avoiding scams. “We urge donors to take the time to make sure their donations are going to legitimate charities that can do the most good for those in need," said Art Taylor, president and CEO of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.
