A protective vest prevented an Asbury Park cop from being seriously injured by a Woodbridge man wielding a steak knife on Main Street yesterday morning. Prosecutors say the cop was slashed in the hand trying to subdue the man. A fellow police officer shot the 22-year old in the stomach in self defense. The Woodbridge man is charged with attempted murder and other counts.

An object that was believed to be an unexploded device was removed from Sandy Hook yesterday afternoon. According to reports, the corroded canister was found near a former gun battery. The State Police Bomb Squad took it to the US Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit.

A Monmouth County Sheriff's Officer and his wife are credited with helping to deliver the baby of a couple that came to his Ocean County home. Friends of Detective Jose Rivera were dropping off their children at Rivera's house Friday when the wife went into full labor. The mother and 7 lb 10 oz baby girl are said to be doing well.
