Regardless of what MTV has outsiders believing, the Jersey Shore is chockful of some hugely talented people, so when one of our own has their talent recognized on the small screen, it's pretty cool.

It's even cooler when I can say it's someone I've known for years.

Mike Kamerman is that guy.

We went to Marlboro High School together, and Mike has been in bands for as long as I can remember. He's also one of the genuinely NICEST dudes ever.

(Throwback: a couple years ago, I had a show on the Point called Sunday Night Shore Alternative, and we used to play a song by Mike's then-band New Crystal Dolls called 'Grenada.' Delicious. I digress.)

Fast forward to 2013, Mike is living in L.A., and has formed a new band, Smallpools.

Last night, they performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, playing the same stage that has seen the likes of Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, and just about every band I listened to in high school, like Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, Finch, My Chemical Romance, etc.

I love the alt-rock sound, and though I'm obviously biased, I think they're really good.

They did 'Dreaming' on the show, and performed 'Over and Over' as a web extra, a song which has been stuck in my head since I heard it.

Congrats, Mike. You guys totally killed it, and I hope this is the start of many big things to come for Smallpools!

Their EP is available now, and you can download the songs on iTunes HERE.
