I bet you didn't know that there could actually be a road in the most congested state in the nation that would be considered a lonely town, but it turns out that we do.

When you think of New Jersey roadways, what do you think of? We're guessing you're conjuring up images of congestion that is literally unbearable.

Maybe you're hearing the beeping of horns in your mind as drivers try to negotiate around the seemingly endless number of roadways that are under construction.

You might even be thinking about the hot summer months when the collage of different license plate colors only adds to the roadway bedlam.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a frequent driver in the Garden State to be able to name a road so lonely that you might be the only car on it at any given time.

But the people at Atlas Obscura have uncovered a road so rarely used that they consider it to be the loneliest road in all of New Jersey.

It's a little stretch of road called Route 49, and it's a 54-mile stretch between Pennsville Township and Upper Township between Salem and Cape May County.

Of course, it is absolutely no surprise that this stretch of road would be nestled in South Jersey. A thing like that could never happen in North Jersey.

So the next time you want to take a good old-fashioned drive on a nice lonely road just to clear your head or something, just know you don't even have to leave the state to do it.
