The victim has been identified as John A. Crimmins, 22.

Authorities said Crimmins had gone swimming off Mantoloking. Lifeguards calling 911 dispatchers at about 2:35 PM reported that he had disappeared from sight of his companions, authorities said.

After an extensive search by fire and first aid squads from several communities, the New Jersey State Police and the Coast Guard, lifeguards in the Bay Head Improvement Association spotted Crimmins, unresponsive, in the surf off Strickland Avenue at about 3:08 PM, authorities said.

Lifeguards initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which was continued by Point Pleasant Beach First Aiders and Ocean County Detective Mitch Remig. Crimmins was ridden by emergency medical technicians to hospitalization in Brick Township, but was pronounced dead on arrival, authorities said.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
