Wow. This really happens in other parts of the world. Dogs used for their meat. Thankfully, our Point Pet of the Week will have a second chance at life.

Otis has been rescued from South Korea, the only country in the world known to soley raise dogs on intensive dog farming facilities to supply the damand for dog meat and associated products. The dogs live in small, barren cages, exposed to all of the elements, given just enough food to survive. They are kept in crowded cages and many suffer from disease, injury, malnutrition, and are subject to terrible daily neglect and, at times, direct cruelty.

Dog meat traders purchase dogs from these types of farms to sell to dog meat markets or restaurants.

Thankfully, the Humane Society International came in and shut down the farm that Otis was on and rescued him and all of his friends. The Emergency Placement Partner Program was able to get him safely to the Monmouth County SPCA where he met some wonderful people who have been teaching him about being a dog. They have taught him that human interaction can be a good thing and he is learning to trust his new human friends.

Otis is around 2-years old and appears to be a Lab mix of some type. He is very shy when meeting new people but is getting better each and every day. He has learned that humans often come with good treats, which he loves. Some of his friends will even share their lunch with him : )

Otis is still learning all about being a dog. You see, he had no idea what these things called 'toys' are...so he's still not sure what to do with them. But he has learned that he loves going on walks, and he is even learning commands like 'sit'.

Now Otis needs a forever home, so please come visit him at the Eatontown location, 260 Wall Street, 7 days a week from Noon to 5 pm -- with extended hours until 7 pm on Wednesdays. For more info, call 732-542-4552 or email adoptions@monmouthcountyspca.org.

Also, this Sunday, July 17th, the MCSPCA will have a special Grooming Event with 6 mobile groomers on site from Noon to 5 pm, offering free grooms and baths to any animal adopted that day. Come by and check them out and maybe you will form a new grooming relationship with someone who will come to your doorstep for the comfort and covenience of your pet!
