When you live at the Jersey Shore, you tend to see a lot of interesting stuff on the beach, but it's not too often you see something like this!

Mark Bokop was walking on the beach at around 5:30 p.m. on March 30, in the area of Maryland Ave. in Point Beach when he caught something very cool on film.

A harbor seal on the sand soaking up some sun!

I spoke to Bob Schoelkopf at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) in Brigantine who said the best thing you can do if you see a seal on the beach is leave it alone.

"Just because they're on the beach, doesn't mean something's wrong with them. This time of year, they'll haul out after fishing to warm up and dry off."

He adds that it can also be dangerous to approach a seal.

"They're wild animals, they bite. They can cause severe wounds to people and to your pets."

The staff at the MMSC said It's also important to note that the seals are federally protected animals, and if you approach them or touch them, you could be hit with federal fines.

They say the law (and safe practice) is to stay 50 feet from the seals -- so if you want to catch the seals on film, you should stay back, and let your camera's zoom feature do the work!
