Howell - Some folks at the shore awoke to the blaring of their smartphones with a tornado alert issued by the National Weather Service, saying things like "take shelter now" and "check local media" along with heavy rainfall, thunder, lightning, and winds that exceeded 70 miles per hour.

Howell authorities have confirmed that the National Weather Service is reviewing video of a brief but powerful storm in Howell this morning calling it a "wind event".

Authorities mention that while damage is spread throughout the township, it was worse around the Route 9 and West Farms Road Area. Two vehicles that were occupied were uplifted into each other, some storefronts were damaged, along with clothing bins tossed around, and building facades blown off. Trees were also uplifted from the ground.

The scene is still under investigation by Howell authorities and the Monmouth County Office of Emergency Management. Officials say that there were no reported injuries and that Oak Glen Park is closed because of numerous downed trees in the area.
