State Police said they will have 140 additional troopers on the roads looking for drunk and distracted drivers and those not wearing a seat belt.

"Last year, nine people were killed during the Memorial Day holiday period as a result of fatal motor vehicle crashes. Five out of the six fatal crashes involved alcohol, drugs, or both. That is a staggering statistic, and it is one we don’t want to repeat this year," State Police said in a statement.

Between May 26 and May 30, roughly 960,100 New Jersey residents are estimated to travel 50 miles or more for the holiday according to AAA.  This is a 1.7 percent increase compared to last year, when 944,169 New Jerseyans took road trips.

Thanks to a grant from the state Division of Highway Safety, at least 19 towns will have extra DWI patrols including Aberdeen, Atlantic Highlands, Brick, Gloucester Township, Hazlet, Holmdel, Highlands, Keyport, Keansburg, Lacey, Lakehurst, Manchester, Matawan, Middletown, Moorestown, Ocean City, Toms River, and Union Beach, according to the Patch of Middletown.

"Supplemental patrols are being added to the barrier island, including Ortley Beach and the town areas north of Lavallette, to assist with the influx of people visiting our town," Toms River Police spokesman Ralph Stocco said.

The Port Authority will also have a checkpoint on the Outerbridge Crossing on Saturday night at 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday.

"If you get behind the wheel after drinking, you risk seriously injuring or killing yourself, a friend, a loved one, or an innocent motorist, and that’s certainly the worst case scenario," State Police said on their Facebook page.
