Wall’s Matt Dollive Scores With No Time Left to Give South All-Stars a Victory in the 2022 SCLCA Boys Lacrosse All-Star Game

HOLMDEL -- When the South All-Stars came up with a defensive stop and Southern Regional defenseman Nate Committee launched the ball like a catapult from his own zone in the closing seconds, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the 2022 Shore Conference Lacrosse Coaches Association Senior All-Star game was heading to overtime.

Until the ball made its way to the stick of Wall senior midfielder Matt Dollive.

Off the restart with barely any time on the clock, Southern's Jack Kolbe flipped the ball to Dollive, who unleashed a long-distance shot that somehow found the back of the net as time expired, giving the South All-Stars a wild 15-14 victory over the North All-Stars at Holmdel's Bob Roggy Field.

"I don't know how or why he thought it was a good idea to throw the ball to me but he did and I figured I have nothing to lose so I shot it as hard as I could," Dollive said. "God was with me and it went in."

Dollive's shot looked to come after the buzzer had sounded but officials got together after a brief delay and declared it a good goal. The improbable game-winning strike was Dollive's sixth point of the game (3 goals, 3 assists) as the future Rutgers Scarlet Knight took home MVP honors to conclude his exceptional career.

Also pacing the South squad was Southern midfielder Zach Wascho with a game-high four goals, St. Rose midfielder Colin Westhoven and Jackson Memorial attackman Matt DeRosa with two goals each, Brick Memorial attackman Henry Lindquist, Southern midfielder Jake Washco, Point Boro midfielder Nick Campbell, and Manasquan midfielder Dan Hyland with one goal each, and Kolbe with two assists. Southern goalie Tyler Sininsky made nine saves in the second half and Manasquan goalie Carter Groezinger made four saves in the first half. At the face-off X, Toms River South's Aidan Vicidomini battled his way to win 9 of 19 draws, and Southern defenseman Brock Lefkus stepped in and won 2 of 3 face-offs.

"It was really cool became the lacrosse community is so inter-knitted where I know a lot of these guys from Southern, 'Squan, Jackson Memorial," Dollive said. "I grew up playing with them on MadDog and Leading Edge, so the chance to come out and play with them and not against them was a really cool experience. I had a great time."

Howell attackman Vin Burns led the North All-Stars with three goals, including goals that tied the game at 13 and then gave the North a 14-13 lead with 1:38 to play. DeRosa then tied the game with under a minute left before Dollive netted the dramatic game-winning goal. Rumson attackman Phil Passalaqua and Middletown South midfielder Luke Rohrman scored two goals each, Rumson-Fair Haven midfielder Tommy French, Howell midfielder Tyler Burns, and Ocean attackman Michael Terry each had a goal and an assist, and Shore Regional attackman Carson Cooke had three assists. Holmdel attackman Kyle Kapcsos, Middletown South attackman John Beyer, Howell midfielder Doug MacKenzie, and Christian Brothers Academy midfielder Aidan Guinnessey all scored once. Middletown North midfielder Hayden Claudio, St. John Vianney LSM/defenseman Mason Shenk, and Rumson-Fair Haven FOGO Noah Beacher chipped in with one assist each. Howell goalie Colin Fay played the first half and made six saves and allowed six goals, while Middletown North's Ryan McInnes made four saves playing the second half. Beacher won the battle at the face-off X with a 17-for-24 record and Shenk went 1-for-2.

"It was bittersweet," Vin Burns said. "But it was so fun playing with my friends that I've grown up with. It was a great way to end it.

There was also a fastest-shot contest at halftime and it was Shenk who came out on top with a winning shot of 101 mph. Shenk, who will continue his career at Binghamton University, was a First Team All-Shore selection by the SCLCA.
