2022 Shore Sports Network All-Shore Football Selections 

FIRST TEAM 

OFFENSE 

QB - Micah Ford, Jr., Toms River North

The Shore Sports Network Offensive Player of the Year, Ford authored one of the greatest seasons in Shore Conference history and led the Mariners to a 14-0 record, the inaugural Group 5 state championship, and the No. 1 ranking in the final SSN Top 10. A dynamic quarterback with FBS-level running back traits and a highly-underrated passing skillset, Ford was simply unstoppable. He rushed for a conference-leading 2,360 yards and 33 touchdowns on an average of 10 yards per carry and threw for 1,203 yards and 17 touchdowns with just two interceptions while completing 64 percent of his passes. He is the fourth player in NJ history to rush for over 2,000 yards and throw for over 1,000 yards in a season. Ford also accomplished this while playing in 37 out of a possible 56 quarters, exiting at halftime of some games and after just the first quarter in others. He was also a tremendous defensive player as a safety for the Shore's No. 1 scoring defense, recording 77 tackles,  4 interceptions, 9 tackles for loss, and one defensive touchdown. A two-time First Team All-Shore selection, he has FBS scholarship offers from Maryland, West Virginia, and Syracuse.

 

QB - Tyler Douglas, Sr., Ocean

Selected as Shore Sports Network's Most Valuable Player, Douglas concluded an excellent career for the Big Red by combining for 2,288 yards of offense and 28 touchdowns on an average of 11.4 yards per play to lead the Spartans to an 8-1 record and the Freedom Division championship. An injury forced Douglas to miss Ocean's first-round playoff game vs. Burlington Township, which further underscored his importance as it ended up being Ocean's only loss of the season. Douglas completed 61 percent of his passes for 1,257 yards and 13 touchdowns with only one interception and also ran for 1,031 yards and 15 touchdowns on an average of 10.3 yards per carry. He played defense only sparingly after starting in the secondary for the past three seasons but did come down with one interception. Douglas is set to sign his National Letter of Intent to attend Temple University. He plans on graduating early from Ocean and enrolling early at Temple to get a jumpstart on the spring season.

 

RB - Sabino Portella, Sr., Red Bank Catholic

Portella concluded his career on the gridiron as one of RBC's all-time greats, starring on both sides of the ball to help the Caseys go 10-2, win the American Division championship, reach the Non-Public B state championship game, and finished No. 2 in the SSN Top 10. Portella rushed for 1,150 yards and 18 touchdowns on an average of 6.6 yards per carry for a Caseys offense that was third in the Shore in scoring at 33.9 points per game. On defense, Portella was an excellent safety who finished with 79 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 1 interception for a defense that was No. 2 in the Shore allowing just 10.9 points per game. Portella is also one of the top wrestlers in New Jersey and will attend the University of North Carolina to compete on the Tar Heels wrestling team.

Falzon spearheaded a Raritan offense that was No. 9 in the Shore (27.5 ppg) by rushing for 1,667 yards and 21 touchdowns on an average of 6.5 yards per carry. That total was third in the Shore and was the top mark among all Shore Conference running backs. He also returned two kickoffs for touchdowns to finish third in the Shore in scoring with 138 points. He was the engine of Raritan's offense with a conference-high 255 carries and helped lead the Rockets to their second straight sectional final. In the South Jersey Group 2 final, Falzon rushed for a career-high 325 yards and three touchdowns on 46 carries before the Rockets fell to Rumson, 34-27 in double overtime. He was also selected as the Independence Division Offensive Player of the Year.

 

RB – Jake Croce, Jr., Point Boro

Croce averaged nearly 10 yards per carry as the fullback in Point Boro's triple-option offense and cracked the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the second straight season, rushing for 1,043 yards and 17 touchdowns on an average of 9.6 yards per attempt and adding one receiving touchdowns. Point Boro had the No. 2 scoring offense in the Shore (42.1 ppg) and went 9-1, won the Independence Division championship, and was undefeated heading into the Central Jersey Group 2 semifinals.

 

RB – Josh Moore, Jr., Toms River North

Despite missing basically three full games and having another player in his own backfield carry the ball 236 times, Moore shined whenever he touched the ball and provided the perfect compliment to All-Shore quarterback Micah Ford in the Mariners' powerful rushing offense. Moore rushed for 1,053 yards and 12 touchdowns on an average of 9.7 yards per carry as  Toms River North had the No. 1 offense in the Shore averaging an astounding 47.1 points per game and set a state single-season record with 660 points. Moore was dynamite in the playoffs after returning from a shoulder injury that cost him the final game of the regular season and the first two postseason games, rushing for 226 yards and two touchdowns in a 48-14 win over Kingsway in the South Jersey Group 5 final, rushing for 87 yards in the Group 5 semifinals (42-14 win over Edison), and rushing for 127 yards and a touchdown in a 28-7 win over Passaic Tech in the Group 5 final. Toms River North went 14-0, won the Colonial Division title, finished as the top-ranked public school in New Jersey, and claimed the No. 1 ranking in the final SSN Top 10.

 

WR – Emanuel Ross, Jr., Red Bank Catholic

The flashes Ross showed as a sophomore were on full display in 2022 as the dynamic FBS recruit caught 29 passes for 615 yards and 10 touchdowns on an average of 21.2 yards per reception. He had two 100-yard games, catching three passes for 104 yards in a victory over Curtis (NY) and catching four passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns vs. Holy Spirit in the state semifinals. Ross has FBS scholarship offers from Coastal Carolina, UConn, DUke, Kentucky, UMass, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Temple, Wake Forest, and West Virginia, and interest from several other schools.

 

WR – Najih Rahman, Sr., Red Bank Catholic

A two-time First Team All-Shore selection was a steady, reliable target for sophomore Frankie Williams, catching a team-high 45 passes for 542 yards and six touchdowns. He had two 100-yard games, catching seven passes for 106 yards vs. Manalapan and catching five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown vs. Rumson-Fair Haven. He concluded his career with over 1,300 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. His play this season helped RBC go 10-2, win the American Division title, reach the Non-Public B state final, and finish No. 2 in the SSN Top 10. Rahman will head to the Ivy League next year and will continue his football career at Brown University.

 

WR – Michael Thomas III, So., Donovan Catholic

Thomas's potential was obvious when he started as a freshman for a great Griffins team last season. He became Donovan's top wide receiver this season and turned in a great sophomore season with 43 receptions for 544 yards and 4 touchdowns. His play helped the Griffins reach the Non-Public A quarterfinals and finish No. 4 in the SSN Top 10. Thomas has received considerable FBS interest and currently holds offers from Michigan, Penn State, West Virginia, Rutgers, West Virginia, Boston College, and Charlotte.

 

WR - Nick Rigby, Jr., Rumson-Fair Haven

A sure-handed receiver who runs great routes, Rigby was the Shore Conference's leader in both receptions and receiving yards by hauling in 61 catches for 789 yards and 7 touchdowns. He caught five passes or more in five of 13 games and had over 10 receptions three times. Those performances came in Rumson's biggest games: 10 for 140 and a TD vs. Middletown South, 11 for 103 in the South Jersey Group 2 final vs. Raritan, and 10 for 109 vs. Caldwell in the Group 2 final. His play helped Rumson win the program's seventh sectional title, advance to the inaugural Group 2 state championship game, and finish No. 5 in the SSN Top 10.

 

OL – Josh Kaye, Sr., Toms River North

The Mariners' standout offensive center used savvy, awareness, technique, and toughness to lead a powerful Toms River North line that paved the way for an astounding 5,763 yards of offense and 81 touchdowns. Toms River North rushed for 4,353 yards and 62 touchdowns and threw for 1,410 yards and 19 touchdowns on an average of 9.5 yards per carry, scored a state single-season record 660 points, and averaged 47.1 points per game. The Mariners had a historic season with a 14-0 record, the Colonial Division title, the program's seventh sectional title, and the first Group 5 state championship in state history.

 

OL – Jaelyne Matthews, So., Toms River North

Matthews started as a freshman for a team that went to a sectional final, and at 6-foot-7 and over 300 pounds had already garnered significant FBS interest before his sophomore year even began. Matthews' stock only rose during 2022 as a standout on an overpowering offensive line that helped produce  5,763 yards of offense and 81 touchdowns. Toms River North rushed for 4,353 yards and 62 touchdowns and threw for 1,410 yards and 19 touchdowns on an average of 9.5 yards per carry, scored a state single-season record 660 points, and averaged 47.1 points per game. Matthews also played along the defensive line and recorded 43 tackles, 2 sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss, 2 fumble recoveries and one interception. The Mariners had a historic season with a 14-0 record, the Colonial Division title, the program's seventh sectional title, and the first Group 5 state championship in state history. He currently holds scholarship offers from 10 schools, including Georgia, Ohio State, Miami, Penn State, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.

 

OL – Lorenzo Portella, Jr., Red Bank Catholic

Portella was the right guard and top lineman for an RBC offense that rushed for 2,215 yards and 29 touchdowns on an average of 6.2 yards per carry, passed for 1,634 yards and 20 touchdowns, and finished third in the Shore in scoring at 33.9 points per game. He was also a starting defensive lineman and recorded 42 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, and two blocked kicks. His play helped the Caseys go 10-2, win the American Division title, reach the Non-Public B state final, and finish No. 2 in the SSN Top 10.

 

OL – Tommy Whyte, Sr., Middletown South

Whyte (No. 71 above) was the top lineman for one of the Shore's best rushing attacks as the Eagles ran for 2,121 yards and 30 touchdowns and averaged 24.2 points per game. His efforts helped Middletown South go 9-2, reach the Central Jersey Group 4 sectional final, and finish No. 3 in the SSN Top 10.

 

OL – Cole Skinner, Sr., Point Boro

A two-time First Team All-Shore selection, the 6-foot-5, 305-pound tackle was a physical force along the offensive line, leading the way for a unit that paved the way for the Panthers to rush for 3,246 yards and 58 touchdowns on an average of 9.4 yards per carry and 325 yards per game. Point Boro had the No. 2 scoring offense in the Shore (42.1 ppg) and went 9-1, won the Independence Division championship, and was undefeated heading into the Central Jersey Group 2 semifinals. Skinner recently committed to the University of South Florida after receiving 15 scholarship offers, including Coastal Carolina, Temple, Kent State, and several of the top FCS programs.

 

OL - Nikolaus Winzer, Sr., Matawan

Winzer led a Matawan offensive line that helped produce 2,289 yards rushing and 29 touchdowns plus 868 yards passing and seven touchdowns for an offense that was No, 7 in the Shore averaging 28.3 points per game. He also played along the defensive line and recorded 59 tackles with one tackle for loss and one forced fumble. His efforts helped the Huskies enjoy a resurgent season with a 6-3 record,  the Liberty Division championship, and an NJSIAA playoff berth. Also an outstanding student, Winzer will continue his career in the Ivy League at Columbia University.

 

ATH – Connor Dietz, Jr., Brick Memorial

After a promising sophomore season that saw Dietz take the reins as Brick Memorial's starting quarterback, he took his game to another level in 2022 by combining for 3,968 yards of offense and 36 touchdowns on an average of 9.7 yards per play. He was second in the Shore in both rushing and passing, throwing for 2,093 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushing for 1,875 yards and 23 touchdowns on an average of 9.5 yards per carry. Dietz also played in the secondary on defense and recorded 71 tackles and three interceptions. He served as Brick Memorial's kicker, as well, kicking 22 extra points. Dietz set multiple single-season records including points (164), rushing touchdowns, passing yards, rushing yards, passing completions and attempts, and career points scored (294).

 

ATH - Jeremiah Pruitt, Jr., Toms River North

Pruitt was the ultimate chess piece for an already stacked Toms River North team and his ability to excel at multiple positions made him an incredibly valuable asset. Pruitt saw time at wide receiver, running back, wildcat quarterback, defensive back, and punt returner for the Mariners, totaling 654 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense and tying for second in the Shore with six interceptions as a cornerback. He ran for 362 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 14 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns. On defense he recorded 89 total tackles with 13.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 6 interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. His play helped the Mariners to a historic season in which they went 14-0, won the Colonial Division title, claimed the program's seventh sectional title, and won the inaugural Group 5 state championship.

Czwakiel fits the cliché of being a Swiss Army Knife perfectly as he affected the game on offense, defense, and special teams on a weekly basis. As Middletown South's quarterback, he completed 59 percent of his passes for 935 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 633 yards and 9 touchdowns. On defense as a safety, Czwakiel was tied for fourth in the Shore with four interceptions and recorded 36 tackles. Additionally, he remained one of the best kickers in the Shore by converting 32 of 34 extra points and kicking five field goals with a long of 37 yards. His play helped Middletown South go 9-2, reach the Central Jersey Group 4 sectional final, and finish No. 3 in the SSN Top 10.

 

ATH – Kyle Verriest, Sr., St. John Vianney

Verriest's ability to play multiple positions on both sides of the ball was vital to St. John Vianney's team. After playing mostly wide receiver for the last two seasons, Verriest also saw time at running back this season and rushed for 725 yards and 6 touchdowns on an average of 6.8 yards per carry. He also caught 17 passes for 305 yards and 4 touchdowns. On defense, Verriest recorded 50 tackles, intercepted four passes, and had 12 pass breakups.

 

ATH - Tai Mann, Sr., Jackson Memorial

Mann was Jackson Memorial's dual-threat quarterback and also a standout cover corner, helping the Jaguars go 7-3, tie for the Constitution Division championship, and reach the South Jersey Group 4 final where they held a halftime lead over eventual Group 4 champion Millville. Mann threw for 1,002 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 873 yards and 10 touchdowns on an average of 7.2 yards per carry. On defense he had 34 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, and 8 pass breakups. He was selected as the Constitution Division's co-Offensive Player of the Year.

 

ATH - Sekou Kamau, Sr., Long Branch

Kamau made an impact on offense, defense, and special teams for a Long Branch team that went 7-4 and reached the South Jersey Group 4 semifinals. He ran for a team-high 520 yards and 5 touchdowns and caught 16 passes for 228 yards and 3 touchdowns on offense, had 36 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, two tackles for loss, and 2 tackles for loss. Additionally, Kamau was a dangerous weapon in the return game and brought back three kickoffs for touchdowns.

 

K/P – Oliver Lorraine, Sr., Rumson-Fair Haven

Lorraine was automatic for Rumson and came through with plenty of clutch kicks in the Bulldogs' biggest games. He was 21-for-21 on extra points and 5-for-6 on field goals, none bigger than his 36-yard field goal in the first quarter and then a 26-yard game-tying field goal in the fourth quarter that sent the South Jersey Group 2 sectional final to overtime. Rumson would go on to defeat Raritan, 34-27 in double overtime, to claim the program's seventh sectional title. RFH reached the Group 2 state final and finished No. 5 in the SSN Top 10.

 

DEFENSE 

DL – Zaeir Day, Jr., Donovan Catholic

Day became a dominant defensive force in his second season to help lead a defense that was No. 8 in the Shore in scoring at 14.6 points per game. From his defensive end position, he recorded 101 total tackles with 3 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 3 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries in 10 games. His play helped the Griffins reach the Non-Public A quarterfinals and finish No. 4 in the SSN Top 10.

 

DL – Aidan Donohue, Sr., Red Bank Catholic

RBC had one of the best defenses in the Shore and Donohue was a major reason why, posting 62 total tackles that included 14 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, and one blocked kick. The Caseys were No. 2 in the Shore in scoring defense at 10.9 points per game and recorded three shutouts. His play helped RBC go 10-2, win the American Division title, reach the Non-Public B state final, and finish No. 2 in the SSN Top 10.

 

DL - Jack Lopez, Sr., Middletown North

Lopez was a four-year starter for the Lions and had a great senior season before an injury on Oct. 21 forced him to miss the rest of the season. He had 5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, 13 quarterback pressures, and two pass breakups. He was also a ferocious blocker as the team's top offensive lineman. Lopez will continue his career in the Ivy League at Harvard University.

 

DL – Peter Dempsey, Sr., Middletown North

Dempsey posted 45 total tackles with 7 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, 12 pressures, an interception, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble for a Middletown North defensive line that was the backbone of the team's defense. He was an underrated two-way player, as well, catching 17 passes for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns as the team's tight end.

 

DL – Cooper Bunnell, Jr., Rumson-Fair Haven

Bunnell was a formidable presence along the defensive line and recorded 105 total tackles, a team-high 15 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles to help the Bulldogs reach their ninth straight sectional final and win the program's seventh sectional championship with a dramatic 34-27 double overtime win over Raritan. Bunnell's play helped Rumson reach the inaugural Group 2 state championship game and finish No. 5 in the SSN Top 10.

 

LB – Colin Gallagher, Jr., Middletown South

The Shore Sports Network Defensive Player of the Year, Gallagher built off an excellent sophomore season to become one of the best linebackers in all of New Jersey. Whether coming on a blitz or stopping the run, he excelled in any situation that Defensive Coordinator Marc Tomo put him in. He was second in the Shore with 149 tackles, including 27 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries for an Eagles defense that was seventh in the Shore allowing 14.5 points per game and recording one shutout. Gallagher also played running back and ran for 522 yards and 9 touchdowns on an average of 7.3 yards per carry. His play helped Middletown South go 9-2, reach the Central Jersey Group 4 sectional final, and finish No. 3 in the SSN Top 10.

 

LB – Davin Brewton, Jr., Red Bank Catholic

A sideline-to-sideline tackler who also made multiple stops in the backfield, Brewton led the RBC defense to the No. 2 ranking in the Shore at just 10.9 points per game. The standout junior recorded a total of 108 tackles, including 4 sacks and 15 tackles for loss, plus an interception, a fumble return touchdown, and a forced fumble. His play helped the Caseys go 10-2, win the American Division title, reach the Non-Public B state final, and finish No. 2 in the SSN Top 10. Brewton has FBS scholarship offers from West Virginia, Syracuse, and UMass.

 

LB – Ty Kazanowsky, Sr., Toms River North

Toms River North's offense got the majority of the headlines this season but its defense was just as dominant, finishing No. 1 in the Shore allowing just 8.2 points per game. Kazanowsky was the unit's leader and a tremendous edge presence who posted a team-high 94 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, and six sacks. He was also the team's tight end who caught a pair of touchdown passes and provided excellent run blocking setting the edge. His play helped the Mariners go 14-0, won the Colonial Division title, claimed the program's seventh sectional title, and won the inaugural Group 5 state championship.

 

LB – Dante Vernieri, Sr., Donovan Catholic

Vernieri led the Shore Conference in tackles with 174 total stops from his middle linebacker position, including a team-leading 4 sacks plus 5 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 2 pass breakups, and a fumble recovery for a defense that was No. 8 in the Shore in scoring at 14.6 points per game. His play helped the Griffins reach the Non-Public A quarterfinals and finish No. 4 in the SSN Top 10.

 

LB - Matt Cassidy, Jr., Marlboro

Marlboro had a memorable season and Cassidy was a huge reason why. He shifted to linebacker after playing safety last season and, despite missing parts of two games with injuries, recorded 81 tackles, 3 sacks, and 11 tackles for loss. He was also the team's starting running back and rushed for 850 yards and 11 touchdowns. He scored the game's first touchdown before an injury knocked him out for the season in the first round of the South Jersey Group 5 playoffs vs. Washington Township. His teammates rallied around him and pulled off a dramatic 21-17 win for the program's first playoff victory since 1994. Marlboro finished 6-4 for the program's first winning season since 1999 and is ranked No. 10 in the SSN Top 10.

 

DB – Tareq Council, Jr., Toms River North

Council provided elite coverage skills at cornerback for Toms River North's top-ranked defense (8.2 ppg), intercepting three passes -- one of which he returned for a touchdown in the South Jersey Group 5 sectional final -- and recording 29 total tackles. He was also one of the Shore Conference's best wide receivers with 24 receptions for 516 yards and 9 touchdowns on an average of 21.5 yards per catch. His play helped the Mariners to a historic season in which they went 14-0, won the Colonial Division title, claimed the program's seventh sectional title, and won the inaugural Group 5 state championship.

 

DB – Shamar Williams, Sr., Long Branch

A two-time First Team All-Shore selection, Williams had a great senior year with 79 total tackles, 3 interceptions, 1 sack, 4 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. He was also Long Branch's leading receiver with 32 receptions for 529 yards and 5 touchdowns. His play helped the Green Wave go 7-4 and reach the semifinals of the South Jersey Group 4 playoffs.

 

DB – Ryan Kalman, Sr., Rumson-Fair Haven

Kalman was a two-year starter for the Bulldogs and saved his best season for last. Patrolling the field as a safety, Kalman tied for second in the Shore with six interceptions and also recorded 66 tackles, three forced fumbles, and one pick-6. His play helped Rumson reach its ninth straight sectional final, win its seventh sectional championship, reach the inaugural Group 2 state final, and finish No. 5. in the SSN Top 10.
