Camping in Jersey might not be the first thing that pops into your head when you think of weekend getaways, but it honestly should be. There’s way more variety here than most people expect. Whether you’re into pitching a tent deep in the woods, pulling up with a camper near a lake, or just want a cozy cabin for the weekend, Jersey’s got you covered. Plus, you don't have to drive for hours to feel like you're a million miles away from your regular routine.

Tips for Camping in NJ Without Losing Your Mind

Camping is a lot of fun, but it requires some planning. Bring bug spray. Trust me on this. Ticks and mosquitoes are everywhere. And Jersey weather? It changes fast. Always pack a hoodie, even in July. Also, be sure to check the park’s firewood rules. A lot of places don’t let you bring your own because of bugs hiding in the wood.

And cell service is hit or miss in the woods. Honestly, that’s kind of the point. If you're like me, you need to remind yourself to put your phone down and look around. The stars are pretty incredible when you find the perfect spot.

Best Spots for Camping in New Jersey

There are a ton of great places to crash, but it all depends on your personal preference. If you're a beach person, spots near the Shore like Bass River State Forest are awesome. You get a little bit of woods, a little bit of water, and way fewer crowds than the boardwalk. If you're more into the mountain feel, head north toward the Delaware Water Gap or High Point. The views are unreal and you forget you're in Jersey sometimes.

If you’re the kind of person who needs a real bathroom and maybe even a mattress, there are campgrounds with glamping setups and cabins, too. It’s camping without all the roughing it, which honestly sounds perfect for people who love the outdoors but still want to sleep. Even Six Flags Great Adventure has glamping available as part of its Savannah Sunset expansion this season.

I turned to social to ask the camping experts in New Jersey for the absolute best camping site in the state. The spot that has it all. Views, amenities, availability, and a reasonable price. The number one choice was almost unanimous.

Round Valley Reservoir in Lebanon, NJ

Round Valley is massive, covering over 2,300 acres in Hunterdon County. The reservoir is the second-deepest in New Jersey at 180 feet. You're surrounded by stunning water and the Cushetunk Mountains. Camping enthusiasts can go "old school," as Round Valley is the only state park that offers wilderness camping. Visitors can also enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, and picnicking all on the same site.
