Monmouth County residents have been fighting JCP&L’s highly controversial plan to install a 10-mile, 230,000-volt power-line through northern Monmouth County under the acronym R.A.G.E. (Residents Against Giant Electric). Perhaps you’ve seen the lawn signs in Middletown, Aberdeen and Red Bank, the primary towns impacted by the 140-foot tall power-lines. Residents are concerned about a potential cancer risk due to the radiation as the power-lines will run through residential areas. Another concern is a significant loss in property values. Would you buy a house with these power-lines running through the backyard? You can join the R.A.G.E. Discussion Group on Facebook and learn about fundraising efforts by clicking http://www.rage2016.com.

No stranger to the fight is environmental crusader, Erin Brockovich who was instrumental in the notorious case against Pacific Gas and Electric in California regarding the use of hexavalent chromium in the town’s drinking water. The contaminated water sickened over 1,000 people and the case was ultimately settled in 1996 with the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit in U.S. History in the amount of $333 million. Julia Roberts portrays Brockovich in the academy award winning film released in 2000, which was produced by Danny DeVito. The real Erin Brockovich makes a cameo in the film, playing a waitress named Julia (fun movie fact).

Today, Erin Brockovich is president of Brockovich Research & Consulting actively involved in several environmental issues. Check out her Facebook page for articles related to her latest projects. You also have a chance to meet her and attend her lecture series at the Jay & Linda Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College, April 12, 2018.
