Beware of IRS Scams: Follow These Tips To Stay Safe

Is it just me or do you receive countless phone calls from solicitors? My home phone number was bad enough, but out of area “unknown” calls on my cell phone is going too far. Nothing like the “IRS” calling for money with a pretty convincing pitch. Some people can spot a scam, but many people, especially seniors are often deceived by these unscrupulous scammers. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau states that illegal/improper use of senior funds, property or assets is the most common type of elder abuse. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office has some tips regarding IRS scams, so don’t be a victim:

1. The IRS does not call to demand immediate payment over the phone
2. The IRS does not call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill
3. The IRS will not threaten to immediately bring in the police to have you arrested for not paying
4. The IRS will not demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to be heard
5. The IRS will not require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes
6. The IRS will not ask you for your credit or debit card numbers over the phone
7. The IRS will not contact you via unsolicited email, text message or other through social media
