St. John Vianney’s Kyle Verriest is the Week 3 Shore Conference Football Player of the Week
Every week this season, Shore Conference football fans will have their chance to vote for the Ocean County Sports Medicine Shore Conference Football Player of the Week on our website. The winner of the poll each week will receive a $25 gift card to Burger 25 in Toms River.
The winner of the Week 3 Player of the Week award is St. John Vianney senior Kyle Verriest, who made impact plays on offense and defense to help lead the Lancers to a 30-0 victory over Monmouth Regional.
Verriest, who has primarily played wide receiver for St. John Vianney heading into this season, has also been used as a running back this year. Against the Falcons, Verriest ran for 102 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 42 yards and a touchdown. On defense where he plays defensive back, he recorded six tackles and two pass breakups and also intercepted a pass that he returned 40 yards for a touchdown.
It was an excellent performance by St. John Vianney's entire defense in holding Monmouth to just 65 yards of offense (57 rushing, 8 passing) to earn their third straight win. After a season-opening loss to No. 1 Red Bank Catholic, the Lancers have defeated Holmdel, Colts Neck, and Monmouth to improve to 3-1 and move into the latest Jeep Store SSN Top 10 at No. 9.
St. John Vianney will try to keep pace atop the Independence Division when it hosts Manasquan (0-2) on Friday night. The Warriors are winless with losses to No. 4 Point Boro and No. 10 Raritan and may be without standout quarterback Brett Patten, who did not play in Manasquan's overtime loss to Raritan in Week 2. Manasquan does have one of the Shore's top running backs in senior Jhamier Howard, however, so the Lancers will need to continue their solid, all-phases play to walk away with another victory.
Verriest earned over 26 percent of all votes cast to win this week's poll with Marlboro's Ryan Mendes finishing second and Donovan Catholic's Najee Calhoun coming in third.
