I really need your thoughts on this one…I am all for being mindful of your neighbors and maintaining a peaceful community, but does this take the “do not disturb” concept too far?  First, a big THANK YOU to all of the responsible dog owners, who pick up after their pooch and care for their pet like family.  We take dog ownership very seriously and it shows in how we spoil, I mean treat our four-legged friends.  Saddle River dog owners need to comply with the current ordinance regarding pet care or there will be heavy consequences.  The Saddle River Borough Council has proposed a prison term of up to 90 days, a $100-$1,000 fine or community service for a dog who barks, howls and/or yelps for a long period of time.  The specifics regarding “time” are as follows…between the hours of 7am-10pm, 20 consecutive minutes of dog noise is the limit and between the time frame of 10pm-7am, the limit is 15 consecutive minutes.  So what happens in this scenario…a shift worker is working during the overnight hours and their home is being burglarized.  “Fido” is doing his job, barking to alert the neighbors, who dismiss the incident as an annoyance.  Isn’t a barking dog one of the best deterrents against burglaries?  Or how about the neighborhood kids who think it's funny to antagonize your dog, while you're not home?  A final vote on the ordinance is scheduled for March 18th.
