Turf scientists say there are several ways for you to reduce the hours of yard care you put in.

A new report in the May 2012 issue of Consumer Reports outlines ways you can have a healthy lawn without all that work.

Among the time-saving tips:

Most grasses can survive for a month without water. But if you have brown spots that are too unsightly, the best time to water is when you can see footprints in the lawn after walking on it.

You should avoid the mistake of doing a light daily watering during a dry spell, as it does more harm than good. Instead, one 30-minute long soak should be sufficient to last a whole month.

Let the lawn go brown during dry spells. Although you might naturally be inclined to water, a color change in grass is merely an indication that it's entering a natural state of dormancy to conserve nutrients.

By the way, 62% of those surveyed say they would rather cook a full-course home-made dinner every night and clean up afterwards then have to be responsible for their own lawn care!
