Marine Mammal Stranding Center Releases 6 Healthy Grey Seals

Brigantine's Marine Mammal Stranding Center released a group of six grey seals back into the ocean on Friday.

All of these seals had been admitted to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center for various illnesses and injuries and have all now fully recovered.

Friday's seal release included four male and two female seals who had been rescued from beaches in Ocean City, Surf City, Sandy Hook, Sea Isle City, and two from Seaside Park.

Formed in 1978, MMSC's mission is the rescue, rehabilitation and release of marine mammals and sea turtles. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is the only Federally-authorized animal hospital in the State of New Jersey that responds to these animals in distress and provides medical treatment.

After caring for the sick or injured seals, the MMSC purposely releases them in a quiet beach setting to prevent the spread of disease and to reduce the sights and sounds of humans for these wild animals. Releases are also done with just a small group of staff and volunteers to keep them low-stress for the animals.
