Morganville, NJ man arrested for DWI after crashing into tree in Atlantic Highlands, NJ
A Morganville, Marlboro man has been charged with DWI after crashing into a tree between Second Avenue and Ocean Boulevard in Atlantic Highlands.
When a patrol officer approached the vehicle Thursday afternoon, around 4:47 pm, he was greeted by the smell of alcohol coming from the breath of Michael Tyrrell, and the odor of marijuana stenching from the vehicle.
The vehicle sustained heavy front end damage in the crash, police said, and there was an airbag deployment.
Police said that Tyrrell sought medical attention from first aid at the scene.
He was then arrested for driving while intoxicated, processed, and then released to a sober party, police said, pursuant to “John’s Law”.
"This incident happened between school dismissal and dinner when many children were riding bicycles and pedestrians were enjoying a beautiful winter day," Atlantic Highlands Police Chief David Rossbach said in a statement. "Please let this serve as a stark reminder not to drink or use drugs while driving. The tree could have easily been a group of kids riding their bicycles or a loved one taking a walk. In this day and age there is no reason to drink or drive when other alternatives such as calling a friend, walking , or utilizing ride share service are readily available."
