Thursday, December 17, 2020, will go down as a very historic day at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

The pandemic has been scary and dangerous for all of us in one way or another. However, for frontline workers like our nurses, COVID-19 has consumed their lives and put them in immediate danger.

That's why when I caught word that the first frontline team member, a nurse manager at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune received the COVID-19 vaccine last Thursday, it brought a smile to my face and hope in my heart.

Ann Olsen, R.N., Nurse Manager of the Critical Care Unit is a crucial lifesaver and serves an integral role in Jersey Shore University Medical Center’s specialized care for patients whose conditions are life-threatening and require comprehensive treatment and constant monitoring, including those battling COVID-19.

Hackensack Meridian Health physicians, nurses, and team members that work in direct contact with COVID-19 patients are now receiving the first of the two-dose regimen.

According to a press release, Hackensack Meridian received a limited supply to be distributed throughout the network in accordance with CDC guidelines, which require two injections at least 21 days apart.

Let's learn from our frontline workers who are not hesitating to take Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine has demonstrated 95-percent efficacy against infection with minimal side effects and works on messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, which instructs cells in the body to make different proteins.

Congratulations to the entire staff at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune for this first step in keeping our frontline workers healthy.

Thank you for your tireless efforts each and every day. We truly owe you our lives.
