The United States Postal Service has announced that, effective July 13, 2025, the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp will increase from 73 cents to 78 cents.

AP News says this is "pending approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission." But make no mistake, it's happening.

This is the 20th time the postage stamp cost has increased since 2000.

Why is the price of stamps always going up?

Axios reports that it's simply the decline in the traditional mail we send.

The USPS's financial troubles are real. The federal agency has lost over $100 billion since 2007.

Oh, these price hikes aren't stopping any time soon.

Reuters says additional price increases are scheduled for January and July 2026 and 2027.

The USPS says they have a "long-term financial strategy" to keep the postal service relevant and operational.

Just last month, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy resigned. He has long said that continuous price increases for postal services are necessary for what he called "a long-standing flawed pricing model."

The government has bailed the USPS out—a lot. President Biden passed a $50 billion relief package, and Congress provided another $10 billion in loan forgiveness.

Even with that, the United States Postal Service is expected to lose $80 billion over the next decade, with the volume of first-class mail expected to dwindle.
