A New Jersey State Trooper is being hailed a hero after rescuing three people from a sinking boat last weekend in the Point Pleasant Canal in Point Pleasant Borough.

State Police from the Marine Services Bureau Point Pleasant Station were dispatched Sunday around 5:08 pm where a 26-foot was taking on water and sinking into the canal.

A good samaritan who was in the area helped transfer five of the people on the boat onto land while the operator and tow others stayed on board to try and get the vessel to a nearby dock but in their efforts rough conditions in the water caused more to spill on board.

Sergeant Michael Krauchuck then responded to the scene and was able to secure the sinking boat to his State Police vessel.

While attempting to pull the boat to the nearby dock though and seeing that the boat was taking on water at a quicker rate, Sergeant Krauchuck determined the three people on board realized that they would not make it while on the boat.

Sergeant Krauchuck reacted quickly and helped pull the three occupants onto his vessel and cut the lines before the boat sank.

All of the occupants were transported back to Point Pleasant Station for a medical evaluation by EMS.

There were no reported injuries.

New Jersey State Police said that "Sergeant Krauchuck’s quick and decisive actions may have helped prevent a tragedy."

This was the first of two reported police rescues that helped save lives this week at the Jersey Shore.

On Monday, two Marlboro Police officers saved the life of a teenage girl who was trapped inside of a burning vehicle that followed a car accident.
