New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania Grocers and Stores Closed on Thanksgiving Day
In recent years, many stores and grocers in the area have decided to remain closed on Thanksgiving Day.
It's about prioritizing family time, work-life balance, and employee well-being.
Once major retailers started to give their employees a breather before Black Friday madness, other companies followed suit quickly.
For years, consumerism has overshadowed Thanksgiving.
It's a head-scratcher, too, especially when many stores open their doors at the crack of dawn the day after.
It all started when the general public said that making employees work on major holidays, like Thanksgiving, was cutting into crucial family time.
Companies also realized that giving Thanksgiving off strengthened employee loyalty at a time of year when retail workers are most depended on most.
Now, online shopping also has a lot to do with this shift.
With customers doing more and more shopping on Amazon and through other sites, retailers no longer feel the need to open their physical stores on Thanksgiving.
Instead, they can still capture holiday sales through online platforms without requiring staff to work on the holiday.
I call this a win-win. Employees get time off, and there's no added cost to retailers.
Some retailers are focusing more on the shopping frenzy on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
By closing on Thanksgiving, stores also create a sense of exclusivity around their in-store Black Friday deals, which may help generate excitement and higher traffic the following day.
Many hometown grocers will be open on Thanksgiving Day with shortened hours.
However, knowing which of your favorite spots will be closed is best so you don't have to nervously head to the convenience store, hoping they have what you need.
