If you’ve ever been stuck at airport security digging through your bag to find that loose lotion bottle or water you totally forgot about—same.

TSA’s been pretty strict about the whole liquids-in-a-bag thing for what feels like forever.

Basically, if it’s a liquid, gel, or anything in-between and it’s over 3.4 ounces (aka 100ml), it’s not making it past security.

That means shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, and even things like yogurt or peanut butter if you're packing snacks. Yup, those count, too.

You’re supposed to put all your tiny bottles in a transparent one-quart-sized plastic bag so TSA can see everything.

Don't forget, only one bag per person.

Drinks? You have to dump them before you go through. Even if it’s just water, it has to go unless you buy it once you're past security.

Now, there have been some updates in a few airports where they’re testing new scanners that can tell what’s in your bag without pulling everything out.

These new machines can even handle larger bottles.

We are currently in the rollout phase. This technology is expected to be installed at all major airports in less than a year. Luckily, JFK is one of the test airports.

This rule only applies to your carry-on bags or personal items not being checked.
