There are residents and drivers more alert it seems nowadays after reports over recent years of people impersonating police officers in Ocean and Monmouth Counties but across the state of New Jersey as well.

It has become easier to potentially detect someone who is not an officer in any way and a most of these reported incidents seem to be occurring at bogus traffic stops.

Once you realize the "officer" is not actually an officer and you know that for a fact, you should alert the real police right away.

In Ocean Township (Monmouth County) on Monday morning, police said that they were called to Willow Drive around 2:25 am by a woman who said she was being harassed by a man pretending to be a police officer.

Police learned from the victim that she was being followed and later pulled over by an unknown individual who pulled up to her and shined a spotlight on her as she sat in the vehicle.

As he shined the light, the victim told police he identified himself as a police officer to her but when she requested him to show his badge, he refused to do so, according to police, and then she in turn called 9-1-1.

He then fled the area while she called police and gave a description of the man and the vehicle he was driving -- a white Ford Explorer that indeed had a spot light on it.

Ocean Township Police said they saw the suspect and vehicle along Deal Road and pulled him over later identifying him as 31-year-old Ahmed M. Agiz of Piscataway who matched the victim's description and led to him being arrested at the scene.

Agiz was brought to Ocean Township Police Headquarters and charged with Impersonating a Police Officer and Harassment while his vehicle was seized, police said, pending forfeiture proceedings.

He has an upcoming initial court appearance but until then, Agiz is in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold Township.

Ocean Township Police believe there could potentially be more victims out there from Agiz' impersonation of a police officer and if that's the case to you or someone you know, you're asked to call Ocean Township Police Detective Steve Walker or your own police department.
