A police officer may be off duty but they always bleed blue and are the heroes we look up to as a society.

In a moment of need a Howell Township Police Officer, who was off duty on Wednesday morning at a fitness facility in Brick Township, came to the rescue of an elderly man who had collapsed.

Howell Police Chief Andrew Kudrick said that without hesitation, Howell Police Officer Jonathan Woolley began a patient assessment and determined the man was not breathing, had no pulse and was beginning to turn purple.

Officer Woolley, who has been on the force for 15-years, along with a trainer who is a former police officer then began chest compressions and rescue breathing on the collapsed man.

An automated external defibrillator was also applied to the patient and a shock was initiated.

They continued treatment until they were relieved by Brick Police EMS and paramedics.

The 85 year old man was responsive as of 10:00 am and is doing well according to hospital staff who contacted Howell Police Chief Kudrick to commend Officer Woolley.

Chief Kudrick said he also received a call from the MONOC paramedics who were involved in the treatment of the 85-year old man.

He said both acknowledged Officer Woolley’s and the trainer’s immediate action led to his life being saved.

Woolley is currently assigned to the Howell Police Professional Development Group (training) and is also a motor officer and a member of the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team (SWAT).

"This is another example how police officers are always on-duty and always ready to help those in need of assistance. In this incident, two officers worked together and saved a man’s life. Great job by Officer Woolley and the trainer!!" Chief Kudrick said.

It's another great job by law enforcement working hard even when off duty to keep the residents of Monmouth and Ocean County safe and be there for them in times of need.

Thank you for your service Officer Woolley.
