Please let this serve as an important public service announcement.

I both write and speak many thousands of words each and every week for the past 30 years.

The safety message that we are sharing with you today is as important as anything we can say or do.

I have been in direct contact with an area Superintendent of Public Schools.

There is no doubt that we have a serious problem in our region, that’s really not unique to just our area.

We all profess to care about our community and especially the children.

The fact is that automobile drivers are inappropriately and illegally passing school buses each and every day. These buses are stopped to pick-up and drop-off students.

It’s happening with great regularity in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland Counties and beyond.

This dangerous practice must stop before we have to endure a horrific human resource tragedy in one of our communities.

The students are in a vulnerable position and they’re counting on the adults to do the right thing.

Please let this serve as a reminder to remember to STOP ON RED.

Here’s one positive example that we’ve found. Superintendent of Public Schools, Susan Speirs gets it. They have demonstrated a true sense of urgency in Dennis Township.

They have posted important educational messages on social media and placed yard signs around Dennis Township to shine the spotlight and bring attention to this issue.

It’s very good, proactive work that you wouldn’t even think should be necessary, but, it is. Even with posted signs in communities and the flashing lights and stop sign displayed on every school bus, it’s still happening at an alarming rate.

There are consequences for being ticketed and found guilty of this serious offense. You’ll get 5 points on your driving record and a $ 100 fine.

The bottom line is that the safety of children is as serious as it gets.

It is our obligation to be careful around school buses. Remember to slow down (stop when required) and observe all traffic laws.

This is a potential life and death matter. It must be taken seriously.
