TOMS RIVER -- To defeat a returning state champion and one of New Jersey's most difficult wrestlers to score against, Christian Brothers Academy's Alex Nini knew he did not have the luxury of waiting for the perfect opportunity. So against Brick Memorial's Evan Tallmadge, he threw the kitchen sink at him.

Nini peppered Tallmadge with leg attacks and eventually broke through with a bout-tying takedown with six seconds left in the third period. The CBA sophomore then got the rideout and escape he needed in the tiebreaker period to win a sensational 120-pound NJSIAA Region 6 championship bout, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Toms River North's RWJBarnabas Health Arena, securing a region title and the biggest win of his young high school career.

Nini was voted as the Region 6 Tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler

It is the first region title for Nini, who last season finished third before going on to place eighth in the state at 113 pounds. It also avenged a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Tallmadge when CBA and Brick Memorial wrestled a dual this season. Additionally, Tallmadge won by 9-1 major decision during last season's state quarterfinals. Nini collected data from those matchups and came to one definitive determination.

"I learned I needed to get on his legs more," Nini said. "Last time I got in on one shot and had trouble finishing. This time I got in on a bunch more leg attacks and I'm going to finish one of them. I definitely think the volume of shots increased my chances of scoring, obviously."

Tallmadge, last season's 113-pound state champion, struck first with a takedown late in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead. Nini escaped in the second period and the bout went to the third period with Tallmadge holding a 2-1 edge.

Tallmadge chose defense and Nini awarded him an intentional escape to make it 3-1 with two minutes left in regulation. In the third, Nini nearly took Tallmadge down after landing a deep single-leg attempt, but Tallmadge's tremendous scrambling ability saw the senior do the splits to somehow avoid the takedown on the edge of the circle with 33 seconds left in regulation. Off the ensuing whistle, Nini whiffed on a low single attempt with his left hand but the re-attack with his right arm found its mark on Tallmadge's right leg. Tallmadge again tried to split to keep his hips forward and avoid the takedown, but Nini stayed on the leg and eventually drove Tallmadge to the mat with six seconds on the clock, tying the bout 3-3 and sending the championship final to overtime.

In sudden victory, a shot attempt by Tallmadge found its mark but Nini was able to break Tallmadge's grip and get his feet. He then tried to counter with an underhook but Tallmadge avoided the takedown attempt and the bout went to rideouts.

In the tiebreaker periods, Nini rode out Tallmadge for the full 30 seconds but was also warned for stalling. Still tied 3-3, now it was his turn on bottom and he escaped with 15 seconds left to win 4-3.

"He got the first takedown, which is unusual for me, so I just had to keep chipping away," Nini said. "I got my escape and ended up getting that late takedown. And in rideouts, my strategy was different this time. Last time I let him roll around a little bit and this time I got the boot in and just went head and arm."

Nini is a fairly aggressive wrestler so he didn't have to alter his strategy too much, and he certainly wasn't going to be reckless against Tallmadge. It was about creating opportunities and throwing as many different attacks at Tallmadge as he could, knowing that finishing even one would likely be the difference.

"I give it to him, he has a good down-block, go-behind on his knees," Nini said. "In the first 10 seconds of the last time we wrestled I took a shot to test him right off the whistle and he almost went down-block, go-behind. So if I'm going to shoot, I can't miss."

"A lot of times the margin of winning or losing is so slim that I only need to finish one, usually. I didn't want to sit back, I wanted to get on him to create more openings. I have a lot of different attacks and I mixed it up and got in on a sweep, a double, a Hi-C. I was getting to him and I knew I would finish eventually."

The Shore Conference is loaded with stars in the 120-pound weight class with Nini, Tallmadge, Southern Regional's Conor Collins, and Howell's Sebastian Ortega. Collins, who was the state runner-up to Tallmadge last season, beat Tallmadge, 3-2 during the regular season. Nini defeated Ortega, who was fifth in the state at 113 last season, 4-2 in the region semifinals. Collins will be the No. 1 seed by virtue of his criteria and the win over Tallmadge. That leaves Nini and Tallmadge as the top two seeds in the bottom bracket, destined to meet for a rubber match in the state semifinals.

"He's a good competitor and it's a fun match when we wrestle," Nin said. "I'm down to run round three."

Hello, NJ: Brick Memorial Freshman Harvey Ludington Announces His Presence

Harvey Ludington's talent was undeniable from the moment he first stepped foot on the mat as a high school wrestler for Brick Memorial. As the year has progressed, he's gone from stud freshman with enormous upside to a state title contender in his very first year.

Ludington's outstanding frosh campaign continued on Saturday when he not only won a Region 6 title, he did so by pinning standout Howell sophomore DJ Henry in the second period. He dominated Henry, a state qualifier last season, and cranked him over with a power half for the fall at the 3:01 mark to claim the 175-pound region championship.

"I was hyped for this," Ludington said of the individual postseason. "It was my chance to shine and put a stamp on my high school career for the first time."

Ludington came to New Jersey from Nevada where he had an excellent youth career, including a Super 32 title among the many high-level national tournaments he won. He suffered a loss early this season to Mount Olive's Hunter Perez, 5-4, but avenged that loss with a 5-1 victory over Perez during the NJSIAA Group 5 final. Ludington has been unstoppable since. The decision victory over Perez is his only victory all season that hasn't ended in either a fall, technical fall, or major decision.

"He puts himself in a position to do these things because of all the big-time tournaments he competes in," said Brick Memorial head coach Mike Kiley. "I think that's a credit to his work ethic and the competition he wrestles all year round."

What Kiley and his brother, assistant coach Dave Kiley, saw when they first got Ludington in the room was a wrestler with a sky-high ceiling who needed refinement. Smoothing out the edges would unleash his full potential.

"We're starting to build his technique," Kiley said. "He's very ray and brute and physical and tough. When he gets more and more technique he's going to be unstoppable, which he's starting to be."

"I feel like I've progressed a lot with my positioning and shots," Ludington said. "When I was younger I hated tie-ups. I kept getting beat in them and it was slowing me down. I didn't have many setups in the beginning of the year but now I'm starting to set more stuff up and be more positional. It's super important to have a big tool box."

Ludington already proved he is more capable of contending for a title with the pin of Henry and the victory over Perez, who was also a state qualifier. The 175-pound weight class also includes Shore Conference standouts Shay Addison of Rumson-Fair Haven (5th in NJ in 2020) and Red Bank Catholic's Sabino Portella (2nd in NJ last season). There's also St. Joseph's (Montvale) Michael Dellagatta (3rd in NJ) and Delsea's Jared Schoppe (5th in NJ). He's only a freshman, yes, but that doesn't mean his goal is anything less than winning next weekend at Boardwalk Hall.

"I know states are going to be hard," Ludington said. "There's a lot of tough competition but I think if I go in with my head right and work hard I can win."

"He's here to stay and I think people are starting to wake up to it," Kiley said. "He's wrestling to win next weekend."

A Man on a Mission: Brick Memorial's Anthony Santaniello Eyes Rematch, State Title No. 2

A third region title has been on Anthony Santaniello's mind, and he joined a select list of three-time region champions from the Shore Conference when he rolled to a 24-9 technical fall over Shore Regional's Gabe Scalise on Saturday in the 132-pound Region 6 championship bout.

But, truth be told, Santaniello will move past the region title quickly. To say he has thought about winning a state championship and avenging one of his two career losses would be a vast understatement.

"I think about it every night," Santaniello said, referencing his 6-5 loss to Delbarton's Tyler Vazquez in the Beast of the East final. "(Friday) night I didn't fall asleep until 12 just thinking about that match over and over in my head. It's probably not a good thing, it's a bit obsessive, but I've ran through 10,000 scenarios of that match and every match coming up in states."

Santaniello is 37-1 this season and 94-2 for his career. His other loss came in the 106-pound state final as a freshman, and he avenged that loss last season when he beat Kinnelon's Evan Mougalian to win the 120-pound state title. Now he has Vazquez squarely in his sights.

"I've been working harder than ever and I'm more confident than ever," Santaniello said. "I'm doing everything I can to make sure that never happens again. It's a little sick, but to be as good as I want to be you have to be sick."

"There's always the danger of overthinking it, but I can't stop so I don't really care. I think it's a good thing. At school I'm thinking about it, at practice I'm thinking about it, going to bed I'm thinking about it. I'm doing whatever I can to win this match."

To hear Santaniello describe it, it sounds like much more than a wrestling match.

"Live or die," Santaniello said. "He wants it, I need it. It's live or die for me and I'm not dying next week."

Howell State Champ Hunter Mays Rolls to Second Region Title

Howell senior Hunter Mays' dominance continued on Saturday when he rolled like a wrecking ball through the 165-pound bracket to claim his second region crown.

Last season's NJSIAA 160-pound state champion, Mays won by fall in the first round, scored a 17-3 major decision over CBA's Nick Stump in the semifinals, and then won by 22-7 technical fall in 2:47 over Freeholds Brandon Smith in the final.

In two seasons in New Jersey, Mays is 51-1 with his only loss coming to Blair Academy's Lorenzo Norman, 2-0, in the semifinals of the Powerade Tournamnet. He has 91 career victories including his first two years of high school in Pennsylvania.

Mays can become Howell's first two-time state champion next week. His competition for the title includes Delbarton sophomore Louis Cerchio, Paramus senior Eric Freeman, and Bergen Catholic senior Nick Fea. Freeman was third in the state last season, Cerchio was sixth, and Fea, a transfer from Wyoming Seminary, defeated Norman, 7-5 in sudden victory, in the Powerade final.

No. 1 CBA Crowns Seven Region Champs

Christian Brothers Academy, the No. 1 team in the final Shore Sports Network Top 10 and the No. 5 team in New Jersey, set a Shore Conference record with seven region champions, The previous record of four had been held by multiple teams. The Region 6 record was five set by Madison Township and then Madison Central (which turned into Old Bridge High School) in 1976 and 1977.

In addition to Nini's victory at 120 pounds, sophomore Tyler Venet (106), senior Garrett Totten (126), and juniors Julian George (138), Tyler Barrett (150), Zander Silva (157), and Robert Canterino (215). The Colts advanced a total of nine wrestlers to the state tournament with junior Nick Stump finishing third at 165 and junior Anthony Lawrence placing third at 175. Freshman AJ Falcone took fifth at 132 and senior Nico Punzi was sixth at 144.

Venet used a first-period takedown to win 2-0 over Jackson Memorial's Jason Seda to begin the championship finals. Seda rode him out in the second period and then chose neutral in the third but Venet kept him at bay to hold on for the region title.

At 126, won his first region title with a 17-0 technical fall over Howell's Saywer Ostroff, who had made a great run to the final as the No. 6 seed. Totten scored early and often to punch his ticket to the state tournament for the fourth time. He is currently ranked No. 4 in New Jersey by NJ.com and has placed seventh in the state in each of the past two seasons.

George, who is ranked No. 1 at 138 pounds, was just as dominant in a 17-2 technical fall over Howell's Giovanni Scafidi. He opened an 11-1 lead after the first period and finished off the technical fall at the 3:31 mark to win his second region title. George was eighth in New Jersey at 132 pounds last season and is now a slight state title favorite after beating Bergen Catholic's Joe Cango in a rematch during the Non-Public A team final.

After finishing fifth in the region last season and missing out on a trip to the state tournament, Barrett earned his second region title with a 3-2 victory over Brick Memorial's Ryan Smith. After a scoreless first period, Barrett escaped and then scored a takedown to go up 3-0. Smith escaped to make it 3-1 and then did the same in the third period to make it 3-2, but Barrett played effective defense to hold on for the one-point victory.

At 157, Silva rallied for a 4-3 victory over Ocean's Shane Cartagena-Walsh to win his first region title. The two wrestled in the District 21 final, as well, with Silva earning a 3-2 victory. This time, Cartagena-Walsh struck first with a quick takedown. Silva got out almost immediately and fought his way back, eventually securing the go-ahead takedown with 14 seconds left in the third period.

The 215-pound final was also a rematch of a District 21 final and the result was the same as Canterino pinned Jackson Liberty's Jake Klein in 3:47. Canterino's development has given the Colts a hammer up top and helped balance out their lineup. He is 31-4 this season.

Howell's Xavier Ortega, Wall's Donovan DiStefano, Ocean's Jared Tracey, and Colts Neck's Matt Jannucci Win First Region Titles

At 113 pounds, Howell freshman Xavier Ortega won the region title with a 3-2 victory over Freehold Township's Ryan Dubnik. Bidding to become Freehold Township's first region champion since Rob Morello in 20021, Dubnik scored the only takedown of the bout but lost thanks to a stalling infraction in the third period. Dubnik was leading, 2-1, when his second stalling call gave Ortega a point and tied the bout 2-2. Dubnik elected to cut Ortega free and trail 3-2 so he could work for a takedown instead of risking a late escape, but Ortega held him off to win the region title.

DiStefano won the 144-pound region title with a 6-4 decision over Toms River North's Ryan Rosenthal. After winning a wild 13-11 bout versus Monroe's Anthony Profaci in the semifinals. DiStefano claimed his first region title and remained undefeated by scoring the only offensive points of the bout against Rosenthal. After a scoreless first period, DiStefano took a 2-0 lead on a reversal and then made it 4-1 with a takedown after Rosenthal's escape. Another escape by Rosenthal and then one to start the third cut his deficit to 4-3, but DiStefano scored another takedown in the third period to clinch the championship.

Ocean senior Jared Tracey continued his overpowering postseason by pinning Shore's Jamie Mazzacco to win the 190-pound title. After no scoring in the first period, Tracey escaped and then took Mazzacco down to go up 3-0. He then went to work on top and cranked Mazzacco over for the fall at the 3:38 mark. Tracey has won all five of his district and region bouts by fall. He is 25-1 on the season with his only loss coming to Mount Olive's Anthony Moscatello, 6-4, in the Mustang Classic finals.

The final bout of the championship round came down to the wire and it was Colts Neck senior Matt Jannucci winning 2-1 in tiebreaker over Northern Burlington's Jule Dolci. Jannucci, who was a state qualifier last season, has been the Shore's top-ranked heavyweight all season and enters the state tournament 36-0. St. Joseph-Montvale's Jimmy Mullen is the overwhelming favorite to win the state title, but Jannucci, who is ranked fourth in New Jersey, has a good shot to make a deep run and finish high on the podium.
