One of Monmouth County's blue heroes will soon be laid to rest after Brielle Police announce the passing of former officer Charles Finnerty.

Sergeant Finnerty served on the force in Brielle from November of 1966 until July of 1976 before joining the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office as a Captain until his 2005 retirement.

He quickly moved through the ranks and was promoted to the Detective Bureau before becoming Detective Sergeant where he served until his 1976 resignation.

"It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of former Brielle Police Officer, Charles Finnerty," Brielle Police said in a Facebook post. "During his time with this Department, he quickly demonstrated his investigative prowess resulting in him being assigned to the Detective Bureau."

"The Brielle Police Department offers our heartfelt condolences to all of the Finnerty family," the statement continued. "Sergeant Finnerty will always be remembered as a friend and fellow "Brielle Police Officer".
