The report comes from the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group and cites reliable and easy-to-use bus service, coupled with increased ride and bike sharing, as factors in reducing campus driving.

NJPIRG's Gayle Schwartzberg said the reduction goes beyond a student's campus life.

"What we're seeing is, the millennials are driving less," Schwartzberg said, "and as they grow into adulthood, they're so used to using public transportation, they less often find the need to own a car."

In fact, according to data from the Federal Highway Administration, Americans between the ages of 16 and 34 have reduced their annual driving by 23 percent.

"Rutgers University Department of Transportation Services is committed to providing all members of the Rutgers community with the best possible solutions for getting around campus safely and easily," said Dorothy Kieu Le, a senior transportation planner with the Rutgers University administration. "In addition to transit and walking, we're placing a renewed focus on bicycling as a way of getting to and around campus."
