The very popular Sandy Hook summer concert series has been canceled for a very unique reason.

A Piping Plover nest. Didn't see that one coming, right? This shorebird is federally protected, and for good reason. National Park officials say there are less than 3,000 nesting pairs of Piping Plovers along the Atlantic coast. The Piping Plover love Sandy Hook though. This year, the birds built more than 20 nests on beaches at Sandy Hook.

The latest nest was discovered on Sandy Hook Beach E which is where the summer concert series usually takes place.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ban any indoor or outdoor activity within 1,000 meters of the protected species. Officials at Sandy Hook tried to find an alternate location for the concerts but were unable to find a spot that worked.

The Sandy Hook Foundation made this statement on Facebook.
