Coastal Habitat for Humanity and the Sea Girt 5K have announced the creation of a fund to assist area veterans in need of home repairs and improvements. The fund, named LIFT (Local Initiative for Troops) will be started by a donation from the Sea Girt 5K.

The Sea Girt 5K Race Director, Mike D'Altrui, says they were specifically looking for a featured charity to help area veterans who are in need of assistance with the upkeep and maintenance of their homes so they started a fund that will perpetuate well beyond the race to help those who have sacrificed to protect and serve our country.

LIFT will allow veterans to obtain assistance with little to no expense. Supporters will be able to direct their donations specifically to help veterans who meet Coastal Habitat for Humanity's qualifications for assistance.

Kim Sambade from Coastal Habitat says the motto of the LIFT fund will be "Serving Those Who Served."

As for the Sea Girt 5K race details, in addition to the run/walk, there will be kids' races and activities like a rock-climbing wall, inflatables, pony rides, face-painting, and more. The event will feature several live bands including the Billy Lawlor Band at the start/finish line, a pre-race performance by the 63rd Army Band, and an after-party at Fratello's Restaurant.

If you'd like info on race sponsorship or to volunteer, please email Mike D'Altrui at seagirt5k@gmail.com.

Even if you're not registering for the Sea Girt 5K, those wishing to donate to the LIFT fund for veterans may do so by contacting Coastal Habitat for Humanity directly. The fund will continue beyond the race with plans to expand in the future.
