We have learned that Stop & Shop is joining stores like Walmart, Target, CVS, and others in phasing out cigarettes. The ban begins on August 31.

The grocer claims that this move is not based on sales, saying in a statement:

Our responsibility as a grocer goes far beyond our aisles, and we are committed to taking bold steps to help our associates, customers, and communities work toward better health outcomes.

Stop & Shop is doubling down on the mission of improved health for New Jersey and New York.

The grocer will be hosting cigarette buyback events at two Stop & Shop locations that have a prevalence of smoking and smoking-related health complications on August 28.

These stores are in Boston and New York City.

The first 100 customers to trade in their tobacco will receive Stop & Shop gift cards and healthy snacks.

They will also have experts with resources to help people quit smoking.

These are America's most popular grocery stores, but too many aren't in our area.
