SUV smashes through window into lobby of Toms River, NJ bank
TOMS RIVER — An SUV smashed through the front of a TD Bank, stopping at the teller's counter, early Wednesday afternoon.
Toms River police spokeswoman Jillian Messina said Anthony Marino, 93, of Toms River was making a left turn from Clover Road onto Route 9 when he lost control of his SUV and accelerated across the roadway and onto the property of the bank located next to the Tri-City shopping center.
Video posted by The Lakewood Scoop from outside the bank shows tire tracks indicating the white SUV went off the roadway and across the front lawn.
The SUV appears to have careened across the parking lot, jumped a curb and smashed through the front doors and window coming to a halt in the back of the bank. Marino also hit a support wire and a light post, according to Messina.
The bank branch shares an entrance with the shopping plaza but is freestanding with its own parking lot.
Another video showed broken glass scattered all over the lobby as police and bank workers tried to sweep some of it away.
Messina said that Marino was not injured. He was issued a summons for careless driving. One person inside the bank was struck by debris and suffered minor injuries.
The Toms River Township building inspector determined the bank building was structurally sound.
