
Unused PTO: A Closer Look At Employee Vacation Habits In New Jersey
The new year brings a fresh round of vacation days, but for many employees, any unused time from the previous year unfortunately can't be carried over.
Many employees feel the pressure of trying to balance work commitments while ensuring they take some time off to relax but for many those days just slip away.

So whether you used up all your PTO days or found yourself at the end of the year with several days left and no time to use them, a new study reveals the states with the most and least unused vacation time.
It turns out, half of all Americans didn't use all their PTO in 2024.

In the study, conducted by Solitaired, residents in each state were surveyed and asked how much vacation time they were allotted at the beginning of the year and then how much they used throughout the year.
They calculated how much time was left on average in each state and ranked them.
Here in New Jersey, we left on average 2.41 PTO days unused.
Here are the states with the most and least used PTO, according to Solitaired.

2. Massachusetts - 5.76 days
3. Hawaii - 5.60 days
4. Oregon - 5.17 days
5. Rhode Island - 4.38 days
6. Oklahoma - 4.29 days
7. Illinois - 4.24 days
8. New Hampshire - 4.18 days
9. Pennsylvania - 4.15 days
10. Louisianna - 4.12 days
Least Used PTO
1. Kansas - 1.84 days
2. Missouri - 1.91 days
3. Michigan - 2.13 days
4. New York - 2.24 days
5. New Jersey - 2.41 days
6. Tennessee - 2.55 days
7. South Carolina - 2.59 days
8. Colorado - 2.60 days
